The spiral continued for the Saint Mary softball team Wednesday.

Visiting Sterling College in its league opener, the Lady Spires saw its losing streak grow to six after suffering back-to-back losses — 9-1, 9-7.

In the opening contest, two poor innings doomed USM. During the second frame, the home team blew open a 0-0 game with five runs and then added four in the fourth.

USM tacked on its one run in the third courtesy of a Kayla Hackney RBI double, which scored Kristina Hoffman. Steeli Norton took the pitching defeat, giving up eight earned runs on 10 hits.

The second contest saw a late-inning rally by Saint Mary come up two-runs short. After falling behind 9-1 after three, the Lady Spires put up two in the fifth and four in the seventh before succumbing to defeat.

Hackney went 3-for-5 with a RBI while Norton added three RBI on a home run in a 2-for-4 effort. Hoffman was also 2-for-4. Nichole Ward recorded the loss following four hits and six runs in one-inning.

USM, 2-12 and 0-2 in conference, will host Bethel College at 3 p.m. today.
