Clarence Walter Nuss, 91, Leavenworth, passed away March 26, 2013 at Medicalodges of Leavenworth.
C.W. was born March 29, 1921, in Wilson, Kansas, the son of Herman and Molly (Schmidt) Nuss.
On October 15, 1960, he married Betty Jean (Stevens) Powers.
He is survived by his wife Betty; two sons Maxwell (Nancy) Nuss and Michael Nuss; one step-daughter Cathy (Don) Long; four grandchildren: Sandy Nuss, Lindsay Nuss, Amy (Brad) Gilbert, and Tina Curtis; and six great-grandchildren: Mia Nuss, Bradley Nuss, Emily Gilbert, Ethan Gilbert, Cece Curtis, and Rebecca Curtis.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Van Earl Nuss, and one sister June (Nuss) Dodd.
C.W. retired from the Army but continued to work at Fort Leavenworth on the fire department. He retired as Fire Inspector at the fort. He was also known for his talented horseshoeing skills and as State Checker Champion several times for the state of Kansas. After retiring, he travelled to nearby checker tournaments and also played checkers by mail with other checker players across the country.
To honor his requests, no services are planned. Burial will be at the VA Leavenworth National Cemetery.
