It took just over a half Thursday for the Leavenworth girls' soccer team to record its first goal of the season.
However, by that time, host Shawnee Heights had built too large of an advantage for the Lady Pioneers to overcome and the visitors lost 7-1.
“I was pretty happy with the ball movement,” LV coach Ken Lott said. “We just need to sharpen up some of our runs and off the ball movement.”
To begin the contest, Heights poured in four goals in the opening 40 minutes of play to hold a commanding 4-0 edge at half.
Kady Swanson got the Lady Pioneers on the board in the second half, thanks to an assist from Amara Drew.
Yet, that was all LV could manage while Heights added three more strikes for the six-goal victory.
“We are a new team with new players, though we did look like we have played together for a while,” Lott said. “We were just a bit off, but I believe that if we can find our groove, we will surprise some teams this year.”
Leavenworth, 0-1, will play at Shawnee Mission North Tuesday at 7 p.m.
