Dr. Al Sandefur ("Doc"), 79, passed away in his home, on March 23, 2013, following a brief battle with cancer. Al and his former wife, Ruth, maintained a chiropractic practice in Leavenworth from 1968 until 1991, when he joined a practice management firm in St. Petersburg, Florida. He is survived by his wife, Julie, of the home, two sons, Dr. David Sandefur, Seminole, Florida, and Daniel Sandefur, Billings, Montana, a daughter, Mrs. Terri Crowe of Kansas City, Kansas, a brother, Bobby Sandefur, a sister, Mrs. Linda Scott, six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and extended family.
While living in Leavenworth, "Doc" was involved in numerous community related activities. He had friends from all walks of life and no matter where you were in the Leavenworth vicinity you could hear the phrase, "Hey, Doc" whenever he walked by or entered a room. Al was extremely talented, playing lead guitar and singing in country-western bands, acting in numerous Leavenworth Performing Arts productions, displaying his oil paintings in local art shows, and entertaining those fortunate enough to be in his company, who later were sure to declare, "He should be a stand-up comedian".
This description barely touches the actual man, who, from the age of 4, had no home of his own until later in life he made a home for his family. He loved life beyond measure and was constantly thankful to the Lord for his many blessings, especially for his children. A bright light surely has gone out, but, the afterglow will continue for a long time to come. Memorials may be made to Cleveland Chiropractic College-Sandefur Research Scholarship, 10850 Lowell Ave, Overland Park, Kansas, 66210.
