Marking the beginning of its season Tuesday, the Immaculata boys' tennis team hosted an eight-team competition.
From out of that melee, the Raiders walked away with third overall.
“If today is a sign of what is to come for us this season, then I am very pleased indeed,” Imac coach Manuel Hernandez said. “It was our turn to edge out a couple of teams this year and we did so with some good playing overall and the promise of some good things to come for us during the season.”
In No. 1 singles play, Andy Eom came in fourth for the Raiders with a 2-2 record. No. 2 singles Sam Rhee also went 2-2 for fifth place.
During doubles play, the team's No. 1 pairing of James Cha and Phillip Hernandez used a 3-1 record to nab third and Adam Habib and Bader Abbound finished 1-3 for sixth.
Immaculata will play at Topeka Hayden today at 3:30 p.m.
Olathe East knocks out Leavenworth
It was another tough outing for the Pioneer boys' tennis team.
Hosting Olathe East, Leavenworth went winless in an abbreviated meet Tuesday.
“We are trying to focus more on getting to the net, getting easier points instead of just constantly hitting ground strokes over and over again,” LV coach Shad Langfoss said. “Some guys are getting better at it, but it's a work in progress.”
Singles play saw Pioneer No. 1 Wesley Barbee lose 8-3, No. 2 Garett Seeger fall 8-1 and Michael Rielly suffer an 8-2 defeat. No. 4 Nick Valledor experienced an 8-2 loss and Josh Benard was tripped up 6-2, 6-1.
In doubles play, No. 1 pairing of Barbee/ Seeger was edged 8-1 and the No. 2 duo of Rielly/Valledor underwent a 8-2 defeat.
Leavenworth will host Shawnee Mission North today at 3 p.m.
