  • The Lansing golf team took its hacks Wednesday in tournament play at Mill Valley, finishing 14th out of the 19 teams from across eastern Kansas.
For the Lions squad of five, the good usually came with the bad. Brett Larrimore, for instance, would've had a fine day on the links if not for the 10 spot he put up on the first hole.
Larrimore battled back from the tough start to finish with a 95, second best for the Lions.
Sophomore Luke Russell led the way for Lansing with an 85.
"We didn't play as good as I expect us to," coach Bill Pekarek said. "I expect us to be better than we have been the past few years."
Rounding out the Lansing five, Greg Garvey shot 98, Lance Hodges was an even 100, and Brian Courtney shot 101.
The Lions' top-four scorers combined for a 378 score on the day. Washburn Rural (Topeka) won the tournament with a 297. Olathe East finished second. Two golfers in the tournament individually shot under par.
The Lions will next compete in a make-up match Friday at Garner-Edgerton. Tee time is 9 a.m.
