  • John Elliott Lee, 81, of Leavenworth, Kan., passed away, April 1, 2013, at KU Medical Center.

  • John Elliott Lee, 81, of Leavenworth, Kan., passed away, April 1, 2013, at KU Medical Center.  He was born May 29, 1931, in Cleveland, Ohio.
    On Jan. 3, 1953, he married Gertrude Anderson and to that union there were five children:  Johnnetta Lee of Pearland, Texas, Wendell (Christina) Lee of Centreville, Ill., Jerome Lee (preceded in death), Jennifer Lee of Leavenworth, Kan., and Naomi (Prentis) Bowles of Leavenworth, Kan. As a young father and husband, John served in the United States Army for 20 years before retiring as a Staff Sergeant.
    On June 16, 1978, he was united in marriage to Georgia Falkner and to that union there were two sons:  Bonnie (Lusia) Falkner of Mason, Ariz., James Falkner (preceded in death) and one daughter:  Manya Falkner (Ronald Greene) of Holly Springs, Miss.
    After retiring from the military, “Slim,” as he was affectionately called, went on to be employed with the United States Postal Service for 20 years. Those along his route knew him for his kind spirit and gentle smile. As a long-time Leavenworth resident, he was a devoted member of Bethel AME Church for many years.
    John was preceded in death by his parents: two sisters, Laura Carr and Margaret Lee; one brother, Charles Lee; and two sons, Jerome Lee and James Falkner.
    John is survived by his wife Georgia of 35 years; daughters, Johnnetta Lee, Jennifer Lee, Naomi Bowles, Manya Falkner; and sons, Wendell Lee and Bonnie Falkner; sister, Janie Davis (Robert) of Leavenworth, Kan.;17 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.  
    A celebration of life will be held Monday, April 8, 2013, at 10:00 a.m. at Bethel AME Church, 411 Kiowa, Leavenworth, KS. The Home-going Service will begin at 12:00 p.m. and will be presided over by Pastor Warren G. Freeman.  Burial will follow at the Leavenworth National Cemetery.
