Melissa Bower is the public information officer for the city of Leavenworth. The city is sponsoring its annual Citywide Spring Cleanup Saturday.
1) What is the city of Leavenworth's Spring Cleanup?
The Leavenworth Citywide Spring Cleanup is an opportunity for volunteers to clean the entire city in one day. Church groups, service clubs, scout troops and many others volunteer to pick up trash. The city assigns each group a grid on the city map and provides trash bags and gloves to volunteers. Once completed, volunteers can leave the trash bags on site and contact city staff to pick them up. This event coincides with the free first Saturday brush site, which will be available that day. Citizens Savings and Loan in Leavenworth is also cosponsoring a “Shred-it” truck at its Leavenworth locations that day. Whether or not residents are participating in the cleanup, anyone can bring documents to shred. This is a great opportunity to destroy junk mail, old receipts or bills or anything else containing personally identifying information – thus preventing identity theft. The Shred-it trucks will be available April 6 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Citizens Savings and Loan, 5151 S. Fourth St. and from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at Citizens Savings and Loan, 312 S. Fifth St.
2) When does it start? How long does it last?
The Citywide Spring Cleanup begins with a kickoff ceremony 8:30 a.m. at Warren Middle School, 10th Avenue and Gatewood Street in Leavenworth. There will be doughnuts, coffee and juice. Volunteer groups will receive their grid assignments, supplies. They’ll also receive T-shirts and free one-day passes to Wollman Aquatic Center as a “Thank you” for volunteering. From there, groups will go to their assigned grid to clean up trash.
3) How many groups will be participating?
There are 40 groups participating with more than 1,200 volunteers. Church groups, school clubs, scout troops, Leavenworth businesses and many others have volunteered to donate their time pick up trash in areas throughout the city. Motorists should be aware of these groups that will be working along roadsides, thoroughfares and other public areas of the city.
4) Can volunteers still help? How?
Volunteers can pick up trash in the city at any time. They do not need to register for the Citywide Spring Cleanup to pick up trash, however, groups who do volunteer to pick up trash in the city of Leavenworth should make arrangements to have the trash bags picked up beforehand with city staff.
