  • Charlotte Louise (Medill) Powell, 90, died, Wednesday, April 3, 2013 in Leavenworth, Kan. She was born Aug. 22, 1922, south of Lansing, Kan., at Highway 73 and Leavenworth Road, in Basehor, Kan. the daughter of George Tabor Sr. and Julia Marie (Riordan) Medill.
    At about the age of three she moved to a farm six miles north of Tonganoxie, Kan., where she attended a one-room McGinnis Grade School, Jarbalo High School, and then graduated from St. Mary University in 1943. She taught two years each in Portis, Circleville, and Randolph, Kan. High Schools. In 1949 she came to Lansing High School to teach English, Spanish and History and also organized the library. In 1955 she resigned and then taught two years in one-room Wallula grade school south of Lansing and sixth grade, one year, in Anthony grade school in Leavenworth, Kan. as well as Elementary Spanish two days a week for three years at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. She returned to Lansing in1966 as a librarian at which time she organized the Lansing Junior High library. She also worked in the Richardson, Intermediate, and Sally Zoll libraries. She retired in 1987 with a total of 36 years.
    In the spring of 1950, William (Bill) Daw Powell Jr. and Charlotte met through a high school junior English student, Charlie Seymour. Four years later, August 7, 1954, they married in Sacred Heart Church in Leavenworth, Kan. In 2002 Bill and Charlotte served as Grand Marshals for the Lansing High School Homecoming Parade. They also loaned a number of railroad items to the Lansing Historical Museum.
    Charlotte received two state library awards and in April, 2010, the Lansing Educational Foundation gave her their First Achievement Award. She enjoyed her teaching career and working with the students. She was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabelle, Leavenworth County Republican Club and Leavenworth area Retired School Personal Association.
    She is preceded in death by her husband, Bill; her parents; and a brother, George Tabor Medill, Jr.
    Charlotte is survived by her children, Rheta (Jim) Wagner, Julie (Rick) Slater, William "Billy" (Cathy) Powell III; grandchildren, Ryan, Jeff, and Sara Slater, Brandy (Wagner) Nikes (Josh); two great-grandchildren, Isabelle and Alex Nikes; three sisters, Monica Russell of Libertyville, Ill., Shirley Ruddy of Lawrence, Kan. and Lorraine Medill of Kansas City, Mo.; and 4 nieces and 4 nephews.
    Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. The rosary will be prayed at 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Francis de Sales Church. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials are requested to the Lansing High School Volleyball Scholarship Fund.
