Over the years, I have been told by several senior Army officers that attending the Command and General Service Course at Fort Leavenworth is a great experience. In fact CGSC is commonly referred to as "the best year of your life."
However, once the course begins students quickly learn that "the best year of your life" is actually a long running joke amongst Army officers. I have now completed eight months of the 11-month course and upon reflection I would have to say that this has been one of the most enjoyable assignments of my career. While in CGSC I have been able to reconnect with old colleagues, make several new friends, and even expanded my professional knowledge base and skills. But the best part of this assignment has been living within the Leavenworth/Lansing community.
My family and I moved to Lansing last July and we fell in love with the community almost immediately. My wife and I were both raised in small communities where the people were neighborly, shopkeepers and their staff practiced customer service, and its citizens took pride in their community. Soon after moving into the area, we discovered that the Leavenworth and Lansing communities both share these desired qualities.
Several of the area businesses (both local and chain), local government agencies, and the Lansing Middle School staff made our transition into the area simple and smooth. For the first time in our military service, Jane and I truly felt that we were welcomed by and felt at home within a local community.
As a soldier, I'm constantly receiving thanks from citizens for my service. Serving our nation is my pleasure and something that I have done proudly for over 19 years. The Leavenworth and Lansing communities do a great job showing appreciation and recognizing our service members, past and present. These and other gestures of popular support go along way with our lives and the lives of our families. In response to the support and gratitude I have received within this community, I wanted to take an opportunity to applaud the citizens of Leavenworth and Lansing and thank them for making this one of the "best years" of our military service.
