  • The Leavenworth-Lansing Area Chamber of Commerce is taking a cue from federal and state governments in updating the community on its economic health.
The Chamber's first-ever “State of the Community” address is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday at J.W. Crancer's in downtown Leavenworth. Free and open to the public, Chamber President Jennifer Daly said the idea developed as a way to get more information to the members of the community, with all of the Chamber's area leaders under one roof at the same time.
“I think a lot of communication is getting lost,” she said. “Some good stories are being lost. This is a chance for leaders to tell those stories. It's also a chance for some hard questions.”
After a short social reception, Deputy to the Combined Arms Center commander Kirby Brown will first speak on the status of Fort Leavenworth, followed by Lansing Mayor Billy Blackwell and a representative of the city of Leavenworth. Each presentation will take about 10 to 15 minutes, she said.
Unlike the federal State of the Union, Daly said those attending will be able to ask questions of the officials following the presentations, making for a more inclusive experience.
“I think some of the best discussions happen when you don't have to stick to an agenda,” she said.
The presentation will be geared toward the business community, but Daly said anyone with an interest in the status of the Leavenworth community is welcome to attend the address.
“Citizens that want to know where are we going? Where are we heading in the community?” she said.
Those who wish to ask questions anonymously should contact the Chamber. Daly said the State of the Community Address is free and open to the public.
The Leavenworth-Lansing Area Chamber of Commerce's first-ever “State of the Community” address is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at J.W. Crancer's, 530 Delaware St. in Leavenworth.
