Second-half surge gives Lansing comeback win; Leavenworth drubbed by Olathe North

For the first 40 minutes of play Tuesday, the Lady Lions looked a tad second off.

Misplayed balls, open passing lanes, missed kicks. The girls' soccer squad just seemed to be missing a beat. So at halftime, Lansing coach Billy Dillon challenged his team.

“We weren't giving all the effort we should've been,” he said. “We regrouped at halftime. I told them it's able about giving the extra effort, about dominating every 50/50 ball. Not just winning it cleanly, but dominating it.”

The message was heard loud and clear. Down 2-1 early in the second half to visiting Bonner Springs, the Lady Lions ripped off five unanswered goals and walked away 6-2 victors.

“We started to win the 50/50 balls,” Dillon said. “We started to be a step faster and it just exploded in the second half.”

Bonner took the early advantage with a score three minutes into regulation. However, Lansing's Tiffany Anderson booted in the equalizer right before half.

At the 34th minute, the visitors recaptured the advantage. Yet, that simply signaled the start of a scoring storm by the home team.

A minute later Ashley Wilcox chipped in a goal, followed by a tally from Courtney Callahan and then another from Wilcox.

On a header, Madi Stebbins added the fifth score and off a double-header, Jenna Hinckley capped off the victory.

Five goals in 35 minutes to nail down the four-goal win.

Lansing, 5-1, will be at Kansas City Christian Friday for a 6 p.m. match.

Lady Pioneers shutout by North
Another loss was tacked on to the Lady Pioneers' ledger Tuesday.

Hosting Olathe North, the Leavenworth girls' soccer team saw its visitors post seven goals in the first half.

Three more early in the second brought the game to a 10-0 finish.

“We are just not in sync,” LV coach Ken Lott said. “We got a young team and typically, it takes a while for young players to develop a chemistry. We haven't had that 'oh yeah' moment yet.”

“Let's hope we can have that soon.”

Leavenworth, 0-4, will travel to Shawnee Mission South Thursday for a 7 p.m. match, weather permitting.
