  • To the editor:
There are 131 National Cemeteries across the United States that provide a place of honor for Americans to lay our veterans (and their families). The City of Leavenworth is fortunate to host one of these places of honor, which is managed by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Over 37,000 of our fallen and their families call the Leavenworth National Cemetery their final resting place, and we gather several times a year to honor them and their sacrifices to preserve our freedom.
Recently, it was brought to our Committee's attention that the flags that usually line the drive into the Leavenworth National Cemetery were in disrepair and in need of retirement and replacement. The National Colors that line this Avenue of Flags on special days like Memorial and Veterans Days come from donations made by the families of those that are interned there. However, because of the wear and tear over years, the number of serviceable flags has been cut in half.
Representatives of the Leavenworth Memorial Day Committee are asking for your financial support in this endeavor. We are comprised of representatives from several veteran service organizations in the area that plan and host the annual Memorial Day events each year at the Leavenworth National Cemetery. Whatever amount you can afford to help replace the almost 70 flags is much appreciated. This will allow us to once again return the Avenue of Flags to its glory as we honor those who always looked out for us. We have already identified a source to buy U.S. made flags, and after purchasing the flags with monies donated by veteran service organizations and the community, we will donate them to the National Cemetery.
Thanks for any support you can provide, and you can drop off your contributions with Citizens Savings and Loan in Leavenworth (or mail it to them at P.O. Box 489, Leavenworth, KS 66048). Please make a note to direct your donation to the Leavenworth Memorial Day Committee.
