  • Excitement filled the headset as Leavenworth coach Ken Lott answered his phone Friday.
“Sorry, it's a little loud in here right now,” the Lady Pioneers soccer coach said. “They are a little excited.”
And for good reason. Thanks to a second-half goal from Megan Besmer, Leavenworth snapped its five-game slide and tallied its first win of the season by beating Baldwin 1-0.
“It was nice to get that win,” Lott said. “Baldwin made it pretty hard for us. They challenged us to move the ball and I thought we did a decent job.”
Following a lackluster first half that saw the score stay locked at 0-0, the Lady Pioneers were  challenged by their coach to step up the effort.
The demand was met when, at the 65th minute, Besmer broke away from the pack for a one-on-one with the Baldwin keeper. Moments later, the Lady Pioneer slid in the game winner and 15 minutes later, the  celebration was on.
Leavenworth, 1-5, will host Shawnee Mission East at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
“We've seen some different looks the last few games as we've been switching up formations,” Lott said.
“But we've been running and moving as of late and starting to understand what we need to do to score goals. I hope we continue that.”
