  • In what its coach labeled as the team's “best varsity performance so far this season,” the Lansing boys' golf team took third at Monday's Topeka Hayden Tournament.
“Our guys competed well today despite the cloudy, cool weather,” Lions coach Bill Pekarek said. “I was proud of their performance and I know they all can shoot two to three shots better, which would move our team score down into the 320s.”
Hayden won the 12-team competition with a 329 while Mill Valley shot a 332 and Lansing was right behind them with a 333.
Luke Russell was the Lions lowest hitter, shooting a 78 to finish second overall individually. Behind him came Cam Chiles' 83, Lance Hodges' 84 and Brett Larimore's 88.
Dalton Burns hit an 89 and Greg Garvey stroked a 93.
“Today we got an outstanding performance from Cam Chiles who shot an 83,” Pekarek said. “Lance Hodges' game is starting to come around...Dalton Burns has battled his way from the JV squad to the varsity sixth-man spot and shot a great score of 89.”
Lansing will participate at the Osawatomie Invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday.
