  • The man who was pursued by Leavenworth police into Missouri Tuesday was on the Kansas Bureau of Investigation's most wanted list.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol has identified the suspect as Brian C. Shields, 27, Chanute. He was arrested for a warrant for first-degree murder that was issued in Neosho County, Kan.
Shields was pursued from Leavenworth to Buchanan County, Mo., Tuesday afternoon. The pursuit ended when he crashed the vehicle he was driving, according to Maj. Dan Nicodemus, deputy chief of the Leavenworth Police Department.
Nicodemus said Leavenworth police had been working with the KBI and other law enforcement agencies to locate Shields.
"We had some information he might be in town," Nicodemus said.
The deputy chief said it's believed Shields has friends in the area.
Leavenworth police reportedly spotted Shields around 2:43 p.m. Tuesday in the area of 20th Street and Metropolitan Avenue. He was driving a 2001 Ford Explorer, according to Nicodemus.
Shields allegedly refused to stop for police and drove across the Centennial Bridge into Missouri. The pursuit ended at the south city limits of St. Joseph, Mo., on U.S. 59.
Shield reportedly had steered left to avoid hitting spike strips that had been placed in the road. He was traveling at a high rate of speed. The Explorer went off the west side of the roadway. He overcorrected to the right, and the vehicle rolled over multiple times, according to information from the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
Shields was ejected from the vehicle, according to Nicodemus.
Shields was transported to the University of Kansas Hospital, Kansas City, Kan.. There, he was turned over to the custody of the Kansas Highway Patrol, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
A passenger in the Explorer has been identified as Angell R. Autumn, 25, Kansas City, Kan.
She had to be extricated from the vehicle, according to Buchanan County Sheriff Mike Strong.
She was transported to Heartland Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph, for what were described as minor injuries, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
Nicodemus said Leavenworth police officers had continued to pursue Shields all the way until the point of the crash.
He said the pursuit took place in rural areas. And in this type of situation, it can take some time for other officers to get to the location to provide assistance. He said some law enforcement agencies in Missouri provided assistance during the chase including the Weston Police Department and Buchanan County Sheriff's Department.
Nicodemus also said Leavenworth officers were less inclined to call off Tuesday's chase than other types pursuits because Shields was wanted for a charge of first-degree murder.
Page 2 of 2 - "That changes the dynamics," he said.
He said Leavenworth police completed a report for the alleged offenses of felony attempting to elude police and reckless driving. This will be forwarded to a prosecutor for possible charges.
Shields was still listed Wednesday morning as one of the "Kansas Most Wanted" on a KBI website.
According to the website, he was wanted in one case for alleged first-degree murder and aggravated burglary. He also was wanted in a second case for alleged possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. He also was wanted for violation of Community Corrections after being convicted of a criminal threat in a third case.
