  • Four Leavenworth County runners are listed as having participated in the Boston Marathon Monday where two explosions claimed three lives and injured about 175 people.
All four are listed as finishing the race before the pair of explosions rocked the end of the marathon route about 2:50 p.m. EDT.
Leavenworth's Anthony Lee is listed as having crossed the finish line first, just after 1 p.m. EDT. Tonganoxie's Levi Huseman, currently a senior and long distance runner at the University of Kansas, was also participating and crossed the finish line about three minutes later.
Francy Mueller and Sheila Prevou, both of Leavenworth, are listed as having finished at 2:33 p.m. They were the subject of a 2010 profile in the Leavenworth Times for their marathon running, at the time hoping to run a marathon in each of the 50 states.
“Sheila and I are fine,” Mueller wrote in an email. “We are on our way back to Leavenworth right now. We finished about 10 minutes ahead of the explosions. We were in the finishers' chute when we heard the blasts but did not see anything except the first responders jump into action. We are very saddened by this act of cowardice.”
According to race officials, there were about 27,000 total participants in the marathon, one of the largest and oldest 26.2-mile races in the world. Another estimated 500,000 spectators watch the event each year.
At a national news conference Tuesday morning, officials vowed to investigate the matter and hold responsible accountable.
“It will take time to follow every lead and determine what happened,” said President Barack Obama. “But we will find out. We will find whoever harmed our citizens and we will bring them to justice.”
