Ten members from local powerlifting squads honored by peers

Earlier this week, the Leavenworth County regional 2013 high school all-star powerlifting team was announced.

The honors list was dotted with several local competitors, including five Leavenworth, three Immaculata and two Pleasant Ridge lifters.

Named to the all-county women's team were Pioneers Maggie Lee (156-pound division) and Lacie Thornton (148-pounds). Immaculata's Olivia Theus (105-pounds) was also recognized.

On the all-county men's squad, Leavenworth's Jarred Donnelson (198/220-pounds) and Matt Vail (114/123-pounds) were selected, as was Raider Brandon Wall (165-pounds). Ridge's Jason Simonis (198-pounds) was also picked.

Honorable mention nods went to Leavenworth's Jasmine Swannagan (heavyweight), Immaculata's Madison Schmucker (114/123-pounds) and Lady Ram Nicole Holden (114-pounds).

Earlier this month, Leavenworth made its third appearance in as many years to the 30th Annual NASA High School National Powerlifting Championships, where the squad brought home more team championships than ever before.

The Lady Pioneers won national titles in power press for the third year straight and the junior/senior powerlifting division. Runner-up team trophies were won by the girls in the freshman/sophomore class and overall powerlifting.

The Leavenworth boys snatched power press and junior/senior powerlifting national crowns, a first in both divisions for the squad.

They also took the freshman/sophomore powerlifting title, leaving the overall team award as the only runner-up position the guys claimed.
