The Leavenworth girls' swim team competed at the Lawrence High Quint meet Tuesday and despite not topping many time sheets, head coach Josh Padilla was still impressed with his squad's effort.
“The girls are continuing to work hard,” Padilla said. “They have kept their focus on improving their individual times every meet and yesterday was no exception.”
Leavenworth finished fifth at the meet with 129 points. Lawrence finished first with 478 points.
Lady Pioneer captain Laura Payne posted a team best sixth place in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 30.31 seconds. Freshman Abby Defore cut 15 seconds off her 500 Freestyle time with a 7:14.96.
Jamie Rainey, Savannah Lucas, Abby McWilliams and Abi Powell recorded a 2:27.88 and a sixth place finish in the 200 medley relay. Payne brought in a time of one minute, 11 seconds in the 100 freestyle.
Marie Claire Peterson, Linnea Biel, Maggie Campbell and Payne reported a 2:05.87 and came in fifth place in the 200 free relay. Alyssa Soto nailed down a 1:51.87 in the 100 backstroke. Peterson, Campbell, Biel and Payne posted a 5:05.86 and put together a fifth-place finish in the 400 free relay.
Pioneer swimmers also branched out away from their comfort zones according to Padilla. Peterson put up a 1:28.26 in the 100 breaststroke, her first time competing in the event this season.
“I am proud of the girls,” Padilla said. “We are within seconds of a lot of our goals. I am confident that they will get there.”
Leavenworth will be at the Blue Valley Southwest tournament at 1 p.m. Saturday.
