  • The developer for a planned hotel in north Leavenworth is hoping to break ground by May 15.
An exact groundbreaking date has not yet been set for a Fairfield Inn and Suites that is planned for the southwest corner of Fourth Street and Metropolitan Avenue, according to John Ferguson, general partner of Leavenworth Hotel Partners.
The new hotel, which will be a Marriott brand, will have 91 rooms.
Ferguson said he has the necessary approval from Marriott to begin construction.
"We've already submitted to the city for permits," he said.
He said satisfying requirements related to the permitting process is one of things that has to accomplished before the construction can begin. He said officials are "working well with us."
He estimates the construction will take 10 months.
The developer purchased the land for the hotel from the city at the end of 2012. The city had acquired more than a dozen properties in the area of what will be the hotel site. Structures on the properties were razed. And the city had grading work done at the site as part of an agreement with the developer for the sale of the land. Cheyenne Street between Fourth and Fifth streets also was vacated as part of the project.
The city was paid $520,000 for the land.
There's a possibility another hotel could be constructed in downtown Leavenworth. Local businessman John Peterson said earlier this month that a hotel developer plans to purchase property he owns at 405 Choctaw St. He said construction work for a hotel at that site could begin this summer.
The Leavenworth Preservation Commission voted April 3 not to block a permit to demolish the former Clark Mechanical building at that site.
