  • In a prequel to today's home meet, the Leavenworth and Lansing girls' swim teams squared off Saturday at Blue Valley Southwest.
Participating in the 12-team competition, the Lady Pioneers edged the Lady Lions by three points to earn 10th overall. Lansing came in 11th. Coaches from both squads were happy with the performance.
“The team's intense focus at practice this week produced some great results,” LV coach Josh Padilla said. “As we get past the midpoint of our season, the girls' work ethic is helping them achieve goals I set for them from the very start.”
“We went into this meet with the primary goal of improving times,” Lansing coach Mona Hauver said. “We did that with six individual times and two of our relays.”
Highlights from the respective rivals went as follows, beginning with Leavenworth:
    * 200 free relay foursome of Laura Payne, Marie Claire Peterson, Maggie Campbell and Abbey Defore won sixth
    * Nicole Tennant placed ninth in the 100 backstroke
    * Linnea Biel, Abi Powell, Savannah Lucas and Tennant earned seventh in 400 free relay
    * Tennant, Peterson, Defore and Payne finished ninth in the 200 medley relay
    * Abby McWilliams took 12th in the 100 butterfly
“I was so proud when I looked at the board for the results of the 200 freestyle relay,” Padilla said. “Our team produced our first possibility of postseason competition for this year...It was a win for the entire team.”
    Lansing high marks included:
    * The squad's 400 free relay quartet placed sixth
    * Joleen Rosario captured 10th in the 500 freestyle, improving her time by 34 seconds
    * Cynnamon Dill and Carmen Mabee each posted times 1.5 seconds short of state consideration marks
The two rivals will co-host a meet at 3:30 p.m. today inside the Riverfront Community Center.
“Both Leavenworth and Lansing will be honoring their seniors,” Hauver said. “It is my hope that we can get a great crowd out to cheer on these teams.”
