  • To the editor:
Many people mistakenly assume prostitution is the "oldest profession." Early humans, however, lived as female collectives, much like other mammals, with groups of women providing for their offspring, enjoying sex with males of their choosing whenever they wanted, finding safety in numbers, not necessarily from male intervention. Thus, the earliest profession for humans was motherhood.
Then men learned they had an actual role in procreation, thus began imposing an All-Father divinity – a jealous and vengeful god – to replace the original loving and comforting Great Mother in order to make themselves appear superior. Through this fiercesome All-Father god, men used fear and social control to limit women's sexuality, creating the first reasons for abortion – to prevent damage to a woman's "reputation," to prevent health complications for older and ill women, who no longer had a choice about when to have sex or whether to be pregnant, and to break ties with abusive males.
Men not only took control of women's bodies and sex lives, but also stripped them of the industries that previously had made them independent and had helped them provide for their offspring – manufacturing clothing, pottery, basketry, and homes. This assumption of women's work served to impoverish women, thus creating the fourth, but now most common, reason for abortion.
Unwittingly, ultra conservatives, in their obsessive quest to control women's sexuality, are actually creating the foundation for a return to the matriarchal communal society. By limiting women's access to medical abortions, they force women to bear more babies to term. More babies born to women, most of whom never marry or who become serial monogamists, now receive their mothers' surnames, not their fathers', so America is well on its way to returning to a matrilineal society.
All that is needed now is for women to create supporting communal groups so that men, once again, will be relegated to the periphery of family units.
Whose actions endanger the monogamous nuclear family the most?
    The ultra conservatives.
Instead of embracing equality between the genders, they are determined to continue to undermine women's social status, which is now third class – below that of zygotes.
If women were allowed the equality that is our right, all men would have to view women as their equals – even their wives. They must renege their desire to control women, treating their wives as equal partners in the household. Women must also be paid equally for equal work.
If women were allowed equality, more heterosexual couples would be happier in their relationships, since there would be no struggle for superiority, and fewer women would seek abortions.
If the UC's true goal is to eliminate abortions, they should embrace women's equality.
