Trailing a single run heading into the final inning Wednesday, the Pioneers put together a four-run frame when it needed it the most.
The offensive explosion vaulted the visitors to a 6-3 advantage over DeSoto and just three outs away from a much-needed win.
However, an error, a walk and a string of hits by the Wildcats saw everything unravel for the Leavenworth baseball team.
Four runs later, the boys in blue experienced perhaps its toughest defeat of the year when they lost 7-6.
“On the bright side, we battled back and never gave up,” LV coach Joe Allison said.
“On the negative side, we couldn't finish. We have too much talent not to do better in these games. The effort is there, we just have to learn how to close out ball games.”
Leavenworth, 4-8, will face Olathe Northwest today at 5:30 p.m.
