  • To the editor:
Our Kansas delegation gladly supported the sequester, even knowing it would cause significant pain for working mothers, those who are struggling to make a pay check stretch, the young, the old, the disabled, the homeless and hungry. They refused a commonsense proposal to mix spending cuts and tax increases and concluded that our pain was a small price to pay for their position.
Then, lo and behold, these three – Lynn Jenkins, Pat Roberts, and Jerry Moran – found themselves stranded on the tarmac with the great unwashed (that would be you and me) and suddenly found the sequester unacceptable.
Did this great insight motivate them to relieve the pain of hardworking, struggling Americans?
No, they chose to relieve their own pain, voting for a thin splinter of a bill that will allow them to be more comfortable in their air travel, still refusing to help the Head Start preschoolers, the working mothers, the struggling families, still refusing to undo the other painful cuts imposed by their support of the sequester by the simple act of working together.
Apparently they have not heard of "the greater good" or the importance of promoting social well-being, strong social bonds, or meaningful living. All of which can be done on a budget.
I'll give our congressional delegation this: They are consistent. Consistently advocating the best interests of Lynn Jenkins, Pat Roberts, and Jerry Moran without regard for the greater good of the American people.
