  • To the editor:
Earlier this year the Concordia Year of Peace committee launched our fourth "Civility Pledge" drive asking citizens to make a commitment "to be civil in my public discourse and behavior, to be respectful of others whether or not I agree with them and to stand against incivility when I see it."
Last year, 312 people in Concordia and surrounding Cloud County signed on.
But for 2013, we wanted to spread the commitment all the way to Topeka and into our state legislature. So we asked each of our state senators and representatives as well as other state officials to sign the pledge.
We're pleased to let you know that one of your local elected officials, Rep. Melanie Meier, was among the 58 who made the commitment. She stands with all of us who believe that as we face important and complex political decisions, we need to have constructive debate that focuses on solutions rather than personal attacks. A commitment to civility allows us all to do that.
The other members of the Concordia Year of Peace Committee and I thank Rep. Meier for her commitment.
