  • Authorities chased a man on foot after he allegedly burglarized a travel trailer at a Leavenworth residence, a police spokesman said.
Once apprehended, the man was found to be in possession of items that reportedly were taken during an earlier house burglary, according to Maj. Dan Nicodemus, deputy chief of the Leavenworth Police Department.
Police were contacted at 10:44 a.m. Monday by a resident in the 1600 block of Osage Street. The caller reported someone was breaking into a neighbor's travel trailer.
While inside the trailer, the suspect, a 22-year-old Kansas City, Kan., man allegedly drink a soda. When he came out of the trailer, he was confronted by another neighbor who told him to stop.
"He took off running," Nicodemus said of the suspect, and the neighbor chased after him.
Two police officers arrived in the area and joined in the foot pursuit. Nicodemus said the chase lasted a couple of minutes.
The deputy chief said officers were repeatedly ordering the suspect to stop and get down, and he eventually did. The suspect was apprehended in the 300 block of North 16th Street.
The man reportedly was in his possession a wallet, credit cards and jewelry. Nicodemus said these items were stolen during a burglary the night before in the 1600 block of Shawnee Street. And a purse that was taken during the residential burglary on Shawnee Street was found in the travel trailer on Osage Street.
The suspect was arrested for allegations of burglary, theft and possession of stolen property. He also was arrested for an unrelated warrant that had been issued through Lansing Municipal Court.
