Recently, my family has undergone a diet change. We have decided to give up foods that contain food dyes, processed meals and food that contains gluten. We have discovered that not only are we eating a lot healthier, we are also saving a lot of money.
By cutting out prepackaged meals we have been able to reduce our grocery bills. Last week I was able to make a casserole from scratch. This meal cost us a little over $4 and it was able to serve my family for several days.
We have also had several fun breakfast nights. Eggs have provided us with several inexpensive dinners and we have made gluten-free Belgian waffles from scratch. Again the dinner cost us very little and filled my family up.
We have also been purchasing fresh fruits and vegetables. The fresh fruits make for great healthy snacks and are an excellent source for a sugary treat after meals. Vegetables are also filling and can provide our family with a filling meal all by themselves. If you purchase fresh fruits and vegetables in season you can typically purchase a lot for very little cost.
Another way we saved money is by shopping at the Leavenworth Farmers Market. We were able to purchase all natural items that were far less expensive than if I had gone to a store specializing in organic items. Another reason I like shopping at the local farmers market is because I am able to help support area farmers.
I would encourage area residents to give up processed items and go toward purchasing all natural items. Not only are processed foods unhealthy, it can cause a strain on your budget.
