  • To the editor:
A tribute to my grandfather, Vincent Heintzelman (Papa), formerly of Leavenworth.
He towers over me blocking the sun, snip
The ice pop top falls off as he hands the cold treat to me
I suck on the ice as sweat drips down my back
After a hard day in the sun working on the dog kennel
I remember those hot summer days
Days spent well with my favorite person.
This great man taught me many life lessons
How to be a loser, winner, hard worker, and overall decent person
Winning and losing at a dog race
Working hard to get the firewood in
A decent person that is enjoyable to be around
I wouldn't be the same without this man.
Now he has lost his tall stature
Although he still needs me, it is to help him walk
    And eat
Life doesn't feel the same when the strongest and greatest man
Has a walker, cancer, diabetes, Crohn's disease, and Parkinson's disease
Every day I am 2,278 miles away from him
Hoping that every phone call I get isn't about his life
Ending and I won't get to say that I love him one more time
Leaving, me with a gaping hole in my heart.
Editor's note: Vincent Heintzelman passed away April 27. His obituary was published in Wednesday's Times.
