  • The Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth mourn the loss of Sister Darlyne Kern (formerly Sister Scholastica), 85, who died on Monday, May 13, 2013 at Providence Medical Center in Kanas City, Kansas. She served the People of God as a Sister of Charity for 67 years.
    Marie Darlyne Kern was born on Feb. 10, 1928 in Leavenworth, Kan., the oldest of three children born to Michael and Mary Wells Kern. She graduated from St. Joseph Grade School and St. Mary's Academy in Leavenworth. Darlyne entered the religious community of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth on August 14, 1945 and, as Sister Scholastica, made her profession of vows on August 15, 1947. She later returned to the use of her baptismal name.
    Sister Darlyne had many talents and used them all to help others. She taught in both elementary and secondary schools; served as a parish worker in Billings and Conrad, Montana; worked in the Post Office at the Mother House; volunteered in the Leavenworth library; and spent eight years in Prison Ministry in Leavenworth and Lansing. She received a B.S. in Education from Saint Mary College, Leavenworth, and a M.A. in Theology from St. Louis University, Missouri.
    In the SCL Community, she was preceded in death by her cousins Sister Frances de Chantal Cahill, Sister Helen Forge, Sister Marie Ann Bertels, and Sister Carol Wells. Survivors include her nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and her SCL Community.
    A vigil will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15, in Ross Chapel of the Sisters of Charity Mother House in Leavenworth, where friends may call after 4 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Ross Chapel on Thursday, May 16, at 1:30 p.m. Interment will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery on the Mother House grounds. R. L. Leintz Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Retirement Fund, 4200 S. 4th St., Leavenworth, KS 66048.
