Raiders earns seventh overall at Class 3-1A boys' state tennis tournament

All that remained was the bow.
On Saturday, the Immaculata boys' tennis team put the final touches on its best season in over a decade.
Competing in the Class 3-1A boys' state tennis tournament in Hillsboro, the Raiders doubles team of James Cha and Phillip Hernandez earned fourth place medals and Imac finished seventh overall as a team.
“We have had a great season,” Imac coach Manuel Hernandez said. “Our boys have represented Immaculata, our Raider tennis program and their families extremely well and I am very proud of them all.”
Cha and Hernandez won their opening first two matches, 6-1, 6-1 over Sterling and 6-2, 6-2 against Clafin. In the semifinals, the duo lost 6-2, 6-0 to a Wichita Independent team and a 7-5, 6-1 consolation contest to a second Wichita Independent pairing.
“On Friday, James and Phillip played their best tennis to date,” Hernandez said. “They had energy, confidence, great serving and volleying, and were aggressive throughout the match. On day two, we could have used a little more of that energy.”
Sam Rhee also competed for Immaculata in the state singles bracket. The Raider won his opening matchup 2-6, 6-4, 10-8 against Kingman, but lost 6-0, 6-0 to a Wichita Independent player and then fell again 9-2 to Bishop Seabury.
“While Sam did not come home with a medal, his win helped us hold onto the seventh place team finish, which is the highest finish for our team in 13-plus years,” Hernandez said. “I am very proud of his play this season and especially his willingness to make adjustments and his positive attitude.”
