  • Like a dam breaking, once the runs started to rain down on Pleasant Ridge Tuesday, they couldn't be stopped.
Competing for a regional crown, the Lady Rams softball team went toe-to-toe with Marysville for five innings. In fact, PR held a one-run lead.
But a disastrous fifth inning eventually led to a 16-3 defeat and the end of the Ridge season.
“The pitching and defense just fell a little bit, then they got the bases loaded and smacked a grand slam,” PR coach Chris Robinson said. “That is what really opened the flood gates.”
Earlier in the day, PR dismantled ACCHS 16-6 to qualify for the championship. Home runs from Cheyenna Owens (two), Jordan Adams and Abby Reed paced the squad to the 10-run victory.
Game two it was Ashley Lingenfelser's 2-for-3 effort that stood out offensively. Owens started on the mound in both games and recorded both the win and loss.
With the loss, Pleasant Ridge finished the year 14-6.
“My girls played hard throughout, you just have to tip your cap to the pitcher from Marysville,” Robinson said.  “We had the bats cooking in the first game, but then just couldn’t get them going in that second one.”
    Pioneers' upset bid falls short
The Leavenworth softball team almost pulled off a first-round shocker Tuesday in its 5A regional opener.
However, the Lady Pioneers couldn't scrape together two more runs before losing 2-1 to Salina South.
“The girls played their best defensive game of the season, we just couldn't put together a string of hits to get us over the hump,” LV coach Christina Lentz said.
Layne Broeker recorded the team’s lone RBI while also allowing just two runs in a complete game pitching performance.
    Leavenworth concluded the year 2-19.
