The Leavenworth Times - Leavenworth, KS
  • To do this weekend: Five Trails Half Marathon

  • The Five Trails Half Marathon is scheduled for Sunday.
    • email print
  • Three event highlights:
1 .More than 450 racers are expected to come out for the fourth annual Five Trails Half Marathon, a benefit for the Leavenworth County Historical Society that runs from Warren Middle School in Leavenworth and through a perimeter of the city before ending back at Warren for an “Olympic” finish.
    2. Race Director Carol Bazemore said the “high point” of the half marathon in the past, so to speak, has been runners ringing the farm bell at the top of the 20th Street hill.
“We call that the Pike's Peak of Leavenworth,” she said.
The 10k race will have a similar feature ― a field of buffalo silhouettes set up along the Five Mile Creek Trail that runners will traverse through
    3. Organizers have added a new, separate race ― a 10k that will take racers through a course that begins and ends, like the half marathon itself, at Warren Middle School and winds through south-central Leavenworth.
    Why you should attend:
Bazemore said in addition to being a fundraiser for the historical society, she believes the course is a good, challenging one that draws runners of all ages ― awards and medals are given for top finishers in the male and female categories and for those in a host of different age groups. However, Bazemore said with numerous water stations, volunteer cheerleaders from Leavenworth High School and the 20th Street Bell and buffalo heard, the race has plenty to offer those who just want to watch, as well.
“We do encourage our families and spectators to jump from point to point,” she said.
