The Leavenworth County Council on Aging will celebrate seniors during its ninth annual Senior Picnic this week.
Scarlet Ross of the Council said the picnic is a longtime tradition for the council, a way for them to honor the population they serve.
“I've been here 18 years and it started long before me,” she said.
Scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday in the Riverview Room at the Riverfront Community Center, 123 S. Esplanade St. in Leavenworth, the indoor picnic is conducted in May each year by the council in conjunction with Older Americans Month, a designation first proclaimed by President John F. Kennedy in 1963 to recognize the contributions that older Americans have made to the country.
“This is how we honor our senior citizens,” Ross said.
The indoor picnic, with its theme “You Are the Sunshine of our Lives,” starts at 9:30 a.m. and will feature lunch, bingo and prize drawings as well as entertainment from Jess Barnett.
The picnic is open to those ages 50 and older. Ross said tickets cost $5 each and are available at the Council on Aging, 1830 S. Broadway St., or at the door. For more information call 913-684-0777.
