  • Gerald "Jerry" Hansen, Sr., 71, passed away on May 16, 2013 at home surrounded by his family and his beloved dog, KC.

  • Gerald "Jerry" Hansen, Sr., 71, passed away on May 16, 2013 at home surrounded by his family and his beloved dog, KC. He was born on May 13, 1941 in Leavenworth to parents John and Fannie Hansen. He was one of nine children.
    Jerry Hansen served in the U.S. Army and is a Vietnam War Veteran. He was employed by the City of Leavenworth Street Department, until being drafted into the Army.
    Upon leaving the military, he went to work for the City of Leavenworth at both the Water and Street Departments, later continuing on to the City of Olathe Street Department and eventually to the Fort Leavenworth Housing Department.
    Jerry lived a full life and enjoyed various activities. He was an avid Bingo player, enjoyed casinos, and being a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals, most of which he did with son, Jerry, Jr. and his good friend, Stanley Buford.
    Jerry also loved spending time with his family, spoiling his grandchildren and great grandchildren and adored his dog KC. Jerry was a life-time member of V.F.W. chapter 56 and American Legion post 23. He was known as a fun-loving, compassionate friend who will be missed.
    Jerry is survived by brothers Benny Hansen and his spouse, Virginia, of Leavenworth and Donald Hansen and his spouse, Ethel, of North Carolina; as well as his children, Gerald "Jerry" Hansen Jr; Lynette "Lynie" Hjelmstad and her future spouse Steve Thomas of California; Annette Davenport and her spouse, Richard, of Leavenworth; and Janet Yorgovan and her spouse, Ron, of Leavenworth. Jerry leaves behind his grandchildren, Jennifer Hamilton of Leavenworth;
    Sara Lotts of Emporia; Vicki Canady and her spouse, Dan of Holton; Marco Hamilton of Leavenworth; Ashley Mathis of Winfield; Jonathan Robertson and his spouse Krystal of Leavenworth; plus 16 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
    He was preceded in death by his father, John Hansen; mother, Fannie (Metz) Hansen; and siblings, John Hansen, Jeannetta Jane Hansen, Dorothy Mae, Albert Hansen, Mary Anne Murphy and Jimmy Hansen.
    Services for Gerald Hansen, Sr. will be held at 12 p.m., Fri., May 24, 2013 at Charter Funerals/Sunset Chapel, 16731 Springdale Rd., Leavenworth, Kan.. Visitation 5-7 p.m., Thurs. at the chapel. Burial in Leavenworth National Cemetery.
    The family suggests that in lieu of flowers that donations may be sent to Freedom Fest Concert, VFW chapter 56, American Legion Post 23 or Good Shepherd Hospice in his honor. Condolences may be left at www.charterfunerals.com.
