  • A man was in custody at the Leavenworth County Jail Wednesday after he allegedly led authorities on a chase around the Tonganoxie area, according to an official with the Kansas Highway Patrol.
At one point, the suspect allegedly drove a vehicle at a state trooper. And the trooper fired several shots, according to Technical Trooper Howard Dickinson with the KHP.
No injuries were reported as a result of the shooting.
The incident began at 8:52 a.m. Wednesday west of Tonganoxie on Kansas 16 Highway. Trooper Jason Wohlgemuth attempted to stop a Ford Explorer for an alleged traffic violation. The driver didn't stop, leading to a pursuit, according to Dickinson.
The vehicle at one point went through a road construction site. The vehicle was driven to a residence where Dickinson said it appeared the driver was trying to hide the Explorer behind a barn.
Wohlgemuth got out of his vehicle and ordered the driver to get out of the Explorer. That's when the driver allegedly drove the sport utility vehicle at the trooper.
The trooper fired several shots, one of which deflated one of the Explorer's tires. The driver allegedly continued to flee in the vehicle.
"It was spitting rubber and gouging the road as it went," Dickinson said of the deflated tire.
The Explorer was abandoned in the area of 235th Street and Mitchell Road.
"He ran back to the barn at that point," Dickinson said of the suspect.
Dickinson said that's where authorities found the suspect, a 32-year-old man. It turned out he had an arrest warrant that was issued in Jefferson County.
Dickinson said the suspect may be familiar with that area, which would explain why he returned to the barn.
There was information suggesting a woman initially may have been driving the SUV, and the man took over at some point.
Dickinson said he didn't have any information on a woman being taken into custody.
