Jean Marie Cooney, 80, of Leavenworth, died Thursday, May 23, 2013, at Sweet Life at Rose Hill, where she was a resident. She was born Jan. 27, 1933, in Leavenworth, the daughter of Joseph and Sarah (Westernberger) Corriston.
Jean graduated from Immaculata High School in Leavenworth, Kan. in 1950. After graduation, she went to work at Ft. Leavenworth. During her tenure she received numerous awards and retired after 30+ years of service.
On Nov. 28, 1953, she married John James Cooney at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, Fort Leavenworth. He preceded her in death on April 20, 2010.
Jean is survived by her children, Teresa Barnett and husband Bob Krouse of Kansas City, Mo., Cathleen Cooney of Leavenworth and John and wife, Lori Cooney of Leavenworth; her grandchildren, Sarah (Todd) Kappelman, Chris Kiser and Damen Kenworth; a great-grandson, Tristan Kiser; and her brother, Joseph (Betty) Corriston.
Jean was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the St. Joseph Altar Society, and the Daughters of Isabella. She supported numerous religious charities. Of all she gave of herself, Jean's family was the most cherished.
Visitation beginning with praying the rosary will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, May 28, 2013, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Rev. David McEvoy, O.Carm., as celebrant. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Immaculata High School.
