  • Bessie E. Sokolov, 95, of Overland Park, Kan., passed away Monday, May 27, 2013 at Delmar Gardens of Lenexa. Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Thursday, May 30, at The Louis Memorial Chapel, 6830 Troost Avenue, Kansas City, Mo., with burial to follow at Mt. Carmel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Beth Shalom Synagogue, Children's Mercy Hospital, the Alzheimer's Association or a charity of one's choice.
    Mrs. Sokolov was born in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Louis and Katie (Grossman) Medov and was a lifelong area resident. She was a 1935 graduate of Central High School, attended Kansas City Junior College and also studied for two years at General Hospital, where she received a certificate to be a lab technician and worked in the office of Dr. Byron Black for several years until she and her husband, Jack, had their first child. She also helped out in the family business, Leavenworth Auto Parts & Supply, from 1944 – 1996. Mrs. Sokolov was a devoted volunteer in the lab at Cushing Memorial Hospital in Leavenworth, Kan.
    She was a member of Temple B'nai Jeshurin of Leavenworth and Beth Shalom Synagogue, was active in many clubs and organizations, was an avid golfer at the Leavenworth Country Club, later at Meadowbrook Country Club and loved to play bridge and travel.
    Mrs. Sokolov was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband of 73 years, Jack Sokolov; daughters and sons-in-law: Carole and Bernard Ellis, Overland Park, Kan.; Linda and Kalman Kaplan, Palm Desert, Calif.; Hedda Winetroub, Leawood, Kan.; sisters and brother-in-law: Rheatha Winnick, Sun City, Ariz.; Harriet and Morton Mann, Prairie Village, Kan.; grandchildren: Mark Ellis; Stacy and Steve Brown, Heather and Tyron Weatherly, Jared Kaplan, Bailee Winetroub; great-grandchildren: Miller and Hunter Brown; Elia and Riley Ellis.
    The family would like to thank Delmar Gardens of Lenexa and the Hospice organizations for all their excellent care and devotion to our "Bessie".
