  • It's taken awhile, but work finally has started on the Leavenworth Veterans Memorial.
A groundbreaking ceremony was held for the memorial in December 2011 on what was thought to be the grounds of the Eisenhower VA Medical Center. But it later was discovered the site that had been selected was actually on city of Leavenworth property, according to Diana Pitts, chairwoman for the committee that's erecting the memorial.
"We broke ground on city property," she said.
An alternate site since has been selected near the Fourth Street entrance to the VA hospital grounds. The new site is a little farther south than the location that originally was chosen.
Located on the hospital grounds, the memorial eventually will be donated to the VA, Pitts said.
According to the Leavenworth Veterans Memorial committee's Facebook page, the memorial is intended to honor all veterans who've served honorably in the U.S. military.
Work at the site began a couple of weeks ago. Pitts said she hopes the first phase of the memorial can be completed by mid July. But the project could be delayed if officials have to wait for granite pieces.
The initial phase will include granite pieces as well as several of what Pitts said are known as battlefield crosses, or solder's crosses.
Pitts said a dedication ceremony will be held after the first phase is completed.
The second phase will feature granite slabs on which the names of veterans can be etched.
Pitts said officials have been raising money for the memorial since 2008.
