This past spring, Willis Willmeth helped guide the Leavenworth boys' track team to its best season in over a decade.
And because of that runner-up state performance — the first time the Pioneers have brought home a team trophy since 2001 — the LV coach has been given the top coaching honor in the school's classification.
Earlier this month, Willmeth was selected the 5A Boys' Coach of the Year for the 2013 track and field season by the Kansas Cross-Country and Track and Field Coaches Association. He was picked from a list of 10 candidates.
“The Kansas Cross-Country and Track and Field Coaches Association honor a boys and girls classification coach of the year to recognize the outstanding work that many of our coaches are doing around the state,” association chairman Gary Melcher said in a statement.
Willmeth will be presented his award at the 2014 KCCTFCA track and field clinic luncheon later this year in front of his peers at Junction City.
