  • The Cars 4 Heroes foundation gave away a mini-van to one local resident in Leavenworth on Flag Day, June 14 at the Leavenworth Country Mart.
Letha Price, a disabled veteran, won the vehicle after receiving a phone call saying she might have a car.
She was shocked by the fact considering she isn't a member of the local VFW in Leavenworth.
"It's very surprising, I'm shocked," Price said.
Price said she used to drive cars when she served in the military. Her duties in the military were to drive important government officials and unload planes. She also met President Richard Nixon.
She is proud of her military record and service to her country. She believes the program, Cars for Heroes is doing a great thing by giving disabled veterans a helping hand.
The car will come in handy for Price considering she has nine grandchildren and could use a mini-van to drive them places.
She said that she walked everywhere before winning the car.
"No more walking," Price said. "I'm on Cloud Nine right now"
Dale Carter, program director for KFKF Radio, said the Cars for Heroes will be having Freedom Fridays starting with Flag Day and will end on Sept. 11. They decided to start in Leavenworth because of its historic military background.
"There's no better place to start Freedom Fridays," Carter said. "There's not a more patriotic town than Leavenworth."
