VFW riders from Post 56 in Leavenworth prepare to start their motorcycles Tuesday at the Eisenhower VA Medical Center domiciliary. They were preparing to provide an escort for a bus carrying veterans from the domiciliary. The veterans from the VA were heading to a T-Bones baseball game in Kansas City, Kan., as part of an event called Veterans to the Ballpark. The program has been an annual event since 2007.
Forty veterans from the VA signed up to go to the baseball game. The primary sponsor for the event the was the International Association of Firefighters Local 64 in Kansas City, Kan. The organization purchased tickets as well as meal vouchers for the veterans. Easton Bus Service in Leavenworth provided a school bus and driver to transport the veterans to the ballpark, according to Leavenworth firefighter Jim Forge.
Various emergency personnel from the Leavenworth area and Wyandotte County also escorted the veterans during their trip to the ballgame, which started at 7 p.m.
