New traffic signals are up and running at the intersection of Broadway and Shawnee Street. But some concrete work remains.
Leavenworth Public Works Director Mike McDonald said the work is part of an ongoing effort to upgrade older traffic signals in the downtown area one intersection at a time.
"We've been working on this a number of years now," he said.
He said the new traffic lights at Broadway and Shawnee are larger and brighter. The signals also contain newer features for assisting pedestrians including counters that let people know how many seconds they have to make it across the street. The new traffic signals also emit beeps designed to assist people who are visually impaired.
He said most of the work at Broadway and Shawnee has been performed by city employees. But some of the work was contracted. He said the cost for the contracted work as well as parts that had to be purchased total between $20,000 and $25,000.
City spokeswoman Melissa Bower said some of the components used were left over from other projects.
McDonald said city officials next will upgrade traffic signals at Sixth and Delaware streets. He said city crews may complete some of the work at that intersection this year.
