  • Despite earlier plans to have the Kansas FreedomFest return this fall in Leavenworth, the event has been canceled.
"It's not happening this year," said Keith Melick, commander of American Legion Post 23, which sponsored last year's FreedomFest.
But he said officials are looking to have the concert event next year.
"It will be back," he said.
FreedomFest made its debut last year. The two-day festival, which was held at Leavenworth's 10th Avenue Park, featured various musical performances as well as food vendors and other activities.
Melick said the decision to cancel this year's FreedomFest was made last week because of funding.
He said it takes about $150,000 to put on such an event, and organizers weren't even close to raising that much money for this year.
He said corporate sponsors are being very tight with money right now.
"We may try to do something small scale (for this year)," Melick said, but there are no firm plans yet.
Last year's FreedomFest was held in November. Melick said organizers had been planning to move this year's event to September in hope of having better weather.
He said a committee for next year's FreedomFest soon will be finalized.
He said putting on the next FreedomFest will involve more than American Legion Post 23. Leavenworth's other American Legion post, Post 94, and Post 411 in Lansing also will be involved in the event.
"It's going to become a Legion event," he said.
Even though 2012 was the first year for the Kansas FreedomFest, there had been plans to have a similar event in 2011. But funding turned out to be an issue in 2011 as well.
