  • The Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth mourn the loss of Sister Marie Paula Hardy, 87, who died Thursday, July 18, 2013 at Ross Hall, Mother House, Leavenworth, Kan.
Justine Frances Hardy was born on Feb. 25, 1926 in Kansas City, Kan., the youngest of five children of Judge Russell C. and Agnes Cunningham Hardy. She graduated from St. Rose of Lima Grade School and Bishop Ward High School, both in KCK. Justine entered the religious community of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth on Sept. 1, 1943 and, as Sister Marie Paula, made her profession of vows on June 20, 1945. She celebrated her 70th Jubilee as a Sister of Charity earlier this summer.
Sister Marie Paula was a fabulous educator who taught students in all grades from kindergarten through doctoral studies. She earned both a BS in Elementary Education and a BA in English from Saint Mary College, Leavenworth; a MA in English from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln; and a Ph.D. in English from the University of Illinois, Champaign. After teaching elementary and secondary students, she returned to Saint Mary College in 1971, where she was an assistant professor and then head of the education department until 1985. In 1986 she served as the Assistant to the Dean of Education at Spalding University in Louisville, Ky. In 1987, she became the Director of the Basic Education Program there until her retirement in 1997. Following her years in education, she served as the Administrator of Holy Family Plaza, part of the Archdiocesan Housing program in Denver, Colo., and engaged in volunteer work at Saint Joseph Hospital and Mount St. Vincent Home. In 2009, Sister Marie Paula retired to the Mother House in Leavenworth.
Survivors include her sister-in-law Margaret (Peg) King Hardy, Overland Park, Kan.; numerous nephews and nieces; friends, and her SCL community.
