The Leavenworth Diamond Jaxx picked the wrong night for its bats to go cold.
Facing Manhattan in the semifinals of its American Legion AAA Zone Tournament Tuesday, the Diamond Jaxx failed to shake a slumbering offense awake.
The result was a rough 11-0 defeat at the hands of its opponent, which dropped the Jaxx into the competition’s loser’s bracket.
“Having a week off hurt and we were rusty,” Diamond Jaxx coach Zak Knapp said. “Also, give a ton of credit to their pitcher. He threw a lot of strikes and we weren't ready for it.”
The Jaxx will now have to win three straight games over the next two days if they want to claim a zone title and the corresponding spot in the state tournament.
That quest will begin today at 6 p.m. against Atchison, who staved off elimination on Tuesday when Geiger Ready-Mix forfeited for the second straight day.
Win in the opener tomorrow and the Jaxx will have a rematch against Manhattan at 8 p.m., with a shot at forcing a decisive finale on Thursday.
However, before any of that can become a remote possibility, the squad must first take care of business against Atchison.
“I'm confident,” Knapp said. “We still have our No. 1, 2 and 3 starting pitchers ready and rested, so I'm very confident that we can go out there and do what we came here to do.”
