Alvin (Jim) L. Smith, 93, of Leavenworth, Kan., passed away at home on July 24, 2013.

Alvin (Jim) L. Smith, 93, of Leavenworth, Kan., passed away at home on July 24, 2013.

Jim, a life long resident, was born on December 28, 1919 to Elmer and Ada Smith. Jim was a well-known business owner and member of the community with a caring family and many wonderful friends.

Jim, a WW II veteran, worked for many years as a supervisor at Kramer Manufacturing in Leavenworth. He also had worked at Great Western Manufacturing CO.

He then founded Smith Steel in rural Leavenworth County and was the owner/operator for over 30 years. During retirement he was a donor and active volunteer at the C.W. Parker Carousel Museum.

Jim was predeceased by his parents, two brothers, Harold and Raymond and one sister Vivian. He is survived by his wife of nearly 73 years Dorothy Hashagen Smith, two sons Dale and his wife Inge of Leavenworth, Kan., and Gary and his wife Mary of Weston, MO, one brother Bill Smith of Leavenworth, three sisters, Esther Berveiler of Leavenworth, Mable Tate of Leavenworth and Myrtle Kirkwood of Independence, MO, seven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren.

Jim will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Friday, July 26, 2013 at High Prairie Church, 26480 187th St, Leavenworth, KS 66048. Funeral service will be held 10 a.m., Saturday, July 27, 2013 at the church. Burial will follow in the Mt. Muncie Cemetery.
