  • I have always lived the frugal lifestyle. However, nothing has made me appreciate it more than the circumstances surrounding my life this week.
Last week I received a phone call from the company I have worked with for nine years. For the past nine years, while I have moved across the United States with my husband's job in the Army I have served as a government reporter, crime reporter and features writer for five newspapers in North Carolina.
My employer informed me a week ago that the company was closing down the five offices I worked for and that I would be out of a job. Although I have sent out resumes throughout the Leavenworth area, it does not appear that anyone is looking to hire a reporter with a desire to work from home and it does not appear that employment is coming my way anytime soon.
The news of my unemployment has caused a huge hit on our family budget. While the news has been hard to hear, I am thankful that my family lives the frugal lifestyle. By living the frugal lifestyle, my family has never lived outside their means. We do not believe in living with debt. While the news has been hard to hear, I know that it means that I will simply have to tighten our frugal reigns.
I cannot stress enough the importance of living the frugal lifestyle. You never knows what the future holds and you must be able to plan for the future. So many people have the popular misconception of what frugal means. So many times people think that frugal means cheap and that I have my children surviving on noodles every single day. However, the dictionary defines frugal as "careful about spending money or using things when you do not need to: using money or supplies in a very careful way."
For our family living the frugal lifestyle means not buying things we cannot afford. We do not feel the need to keep up with the Jones and do not have the newest and greatest gadgets. Before we make large purchases, we make sure that we plan for the future and make sure that it does not have a negative impact on our budget. We also try to set up a little nest egg to help ensure that we have a little extra money saved away for emergencies.
I cannot stress enough the importance of living the frugal lifestyle. In today's economy you never know what the future holds and I cannot stress the importance of making sure you are prepared for life's unexpected situations.
