  • Georgge Hodge is the vice president of the Leavenworth Triathlon Club. The club has monthly meetings to talk about bike maintenance, race nutrition, injury prevention and other fitness topics. Leavenworth Parks and Recreation and the Leavenworth Triathlon Club will host the second running of the Dog Daze Duathlon at 7 p.m. on Aug. 11 at Warren Middle School. 1. What’s so different about this race? It’s a run-bike-run sequence, so athletes will have to change from running to biking then back to running. 2. How can you get ready for the race? Practice both disciplines in a single workout. Practice jumping on your bike and riding a few miles immediately after running. Likewise, practice running immediately after. Eat a well balanced dinner the night before and a good prerace breakfast that morning. Ensure you hydrate that morning, too. 3. Do I need a racing bike for this event? Most any bike will work. However, tandem bikes and recumbent bike are not allowed. 4. What should participants wear? Wear a nylon or synthetic blend t-shirt or jersey. Consider wearing bicycle gloves, too. 5. What expectations should the participants have? My favorite tip is to use this event to do some personal goal setting. It will be physically and psychologically demanding to see if you can complete all three events during our Kansas heat wave. For every person that crosses the finish line that morning, there will be millions of people who never had the courage to get off the couch and try it.
