  • A boy was taken to the hospital Sunday after he was struck by a vehicle in Leavenworth, a police spokesman said.
The accident was reported at 1:20 p.m. Sunday in the area of Fourth and Limit streets.
The 9-year-old boy apparently was running across the street to catch up with his father when he was struck by a northbound 2008 Suzuki XL7, according to Maj. Dan Nicodemus, deputy chief of the Leavenworth Police Department.
The deputy chief said the accident occurred on the south side of the intersection.
"The child was not in the crosswalk," Nicodemus said.
The 61-year-old woman who was driving the sport utility vehicle reported to police that she saw the boy and attempted to stop, but she wasn't able to stop in time.
Leavenworth County EMS personnel treated the boy at the scene, and he was transported to Children's Mercy Hospital, Kansas City, Mo., for an injury to his left leg.
