Gladys Mae Henderson-Royston passed away Tuesday, August 6, 2013. Gladys was born January 11, 1916 in McAlester, Okla., to Jones and Janie Shields. She was one of two children.
As a young child, she lived in Oklahoma and then moved to Kansas with her foster mother, Artina Bennett, after her parents died. She has been a Leavenworth resident for over 80 years.
She was previously owner and manager of Henderson Rentals. She was a former member of the Chamber of Commerce and First United Methodist Church. Her first husband, Mr. Henderson, preceded her in death and her second husband, Alva H. Royston, preceded her in death. She had one son, David L. Royston, deceased and one foster daughter, Naomi L. Cohen, Lawton Okla., her brother, Frank Shields and foster siblings, Gladys Brown, William Jennings all preceded her in death. She is survived by her four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by her legal guardian, Jennifer Carpenter and guardians' family, Beatriz, Jennifer and Jalisa Carpenter.
The family will receive friends on Friday, August 9, 2013 from 11:30 to noon at the Davis Funeral Chapel followed by a funeral service at noon at the funeral chapel. Burial will follow in the Mt. Muncie Cemetery, Lansing, Kan.
